Student Privacy Policy

Meto, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America. It has been recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code (EIN: 84-2456429). Hereafter, Meto Inc. will be referred to as "Meto", “we”, “us” and/or “our.”


Meto has developed an online “meeting place” (the “service”) that enables students (hereafter referred to as “you” and “your”) to create unique profiles in order to access and connect with universities and other educational institutions (hereafter referred to as “Educational Institutions"). 


When you provide your personal data to Meto, Meto serves as the data controller in order to provide you with the service. This Privacy Policy describes how we process your data.


Types of Personal Data Collected


We collect your personal data when you create an account to access our service or when you provide your data directly to us. When this occurs, we may ask you to provide:


  • Basic information (e.g. name, age, gender, date and place of birth, disability information, etc.)

  • Contact information (e.g. email address, phone number, etc.)

  • Nationality information (e.g. citizenship, asylum information, etc.)

  • Family information (e.g. educational attainment of parents, etc.)

  • Educational information (e.g., predicted grades, exam scores, etc.)

  • Financial information (e.g., funds available to contribute to costs of educational opportunities)

  • University-preference information (e.g., desired start date, desired courses of study, etc.)

  • Extracurricular information (e.g., how time outside of class is spent, etc.)

  • Religious information/religious preference (which is optional – you can voluntarily choose to provide this for the purpose of connecting you with the most suitable Educational Institutions).


Collection and Use of Personal Data


We use your personal data to create a user profile on our service to enable you to connect with Educational Institutions to pursue educational opportunities.


Where applicable laws require a legal basis to process your personal data, we rely on the following:


  • Consent – to the processing of your personal data when you create a profile on our service, and your explicit consent to process any sensitive personal data (e.g., religious beliefs) that you choose to share;

  • Performance of contact – providing the service in accordance with our terms of use; 

  • Legitimate Interests – processing your personal data to enhance and improve our service or to verify the accuracy of (or supplement) the information you provide to us; and

  • Legal Obligations – where we are subject to applicable legal obligations that require us to process certain personal data.


Sharing and Transfer of Personal Data


In order to provide our service, we share or receive your personal data from the following parties:


  • You. Meto usually receives your personal data directly from you.

  • High schools, other academic institutions, your Supporting Organization, or your country’s ministry of education or examination boards. We may also obtain your personal data from your high school (e.g., teachers, guidance counselors and other high school officials), representatives from your supporting organization, or your country’s ministry of education or other related ministries or examination boards.


Meto may share your personal data with:


  • Educational Institutions. Educational Institutions access our service and view student profiles to identify students for educational opportunities.

  • High schools, other academic institutions, your Supporting Organization, or your country’s ministry of education or examination boards. We may share your information with these institutions as well.

  • Software providers, suppliers or service providers. We may share certain personal data with our service providers, suppliers and software providers for limited purposes such as providing you with the service and technical support when using the service.


Your personal data may be modified by:


  • Meto. In cases where we believe your intent was clear but the actual input was mistaken (e.g., a slight misspelling of the name of your high school), Meto staff may make a change to your profile.

  • Your guidance counselor at your high school or Supporting Organization. Meto may grant this person(s) the opportunity to modify your answers to certain questions if he/she believes your answer is incorrect or misleading.


If your profile is modified either by Meto or by your guidance counselor, you will be notified so that you can review the modifications and make further changes, if necessary.


Meto is based in the United States, and our service may involve the processing of your personal data in jurisdictions outside of your country of residence. In some cases, these jurisdictions may  not offer the same data protection safeguards. Where this is the case, Meto will take measures to ensure your personal data is protected in accordance with applicable data protection laws. Where such laws require your consent to data transfers, by providing your personal data to us, you agree to the transfer of your personal data to the United States.


Your Rights


Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right, subject to certain exemptions (where applicable), to access your personal data, correct, object to or request the restriction of processing of your personal data, as well as the right of erasure and data portability regarding your personal data. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time. To exercise any of these rights, please email us at [email protected].


In addition, you have the right to lodge a complaint about the processing of your personal data with your local supervisory authority. 


Retention of Your Personal Data


We retain your personal data for as long as necessary in order to provide you with the service. Your personal data will be deleted when it is no longer required in connection with the service, or upon your request. Please note that where applicable laws require us to do so, we may keep certain limited personal data after you cease to use the service.


Security


Meto is committed to protecting the security of the personal data you provide us, and we implement rigorous technical and organizational security measures to protect such data while it is under our control. However, like all online services, we cannot fully guarantee 100% security.
